BRIENENOORDEILAND\
I explored biomaterials on the Brienenoord Eiland in Rotterdam from September 2024- untill December 2024. Here i did research, projects, experiments and an exhibition. I made my own leaf paper and sculptures out of natural river clay.
‘Ben ik nog te lezen?’ Is a project developed during my biomaterial research time at brienenoordeiland (sept-dec 2024) Fascinated by autumn leaves i used them as my medium, making paper trough chopping, boiling, blending, sieving and trousands of found leaves. This project captures the islands’s cycle of life, decay and renewal trough seasonal benefits. Reflecting on the relationship between nature and humans.
Exploring the contrast between urban life and nature, I screen-printed graffiti found on the island onto the delicate, handmade leaf paper. This intentional "disturbance" highlights the tension between raw urban expression and nature’s fragility. The project emphasizes sustainability, materiality, and awareness, with organic materials symbolizing both vulnerability and resilience
I want to return the materials I used from Brienenoord Island back to nature, allowing my booklet to be overgrown by plants, mold, flowers, and grass. In 2025, I plan to document this process weekly through photography, eventually creating a booklet. As my original work fades, this documentation will become the final artwork; a reflection on nature’s ability to reclaim and transform.
Along the riverside of the brienenoord eiland i collected riverclay, from the Maas. i experimented with making different forms and fired my ceramics in the natural omwven we build on the van brienenoord island. The natural clay has lots of nutrients what makes the clay a fertile soil. I experimented with growing cress seeds into the clay and also tirred growing the cress out of my paper.
